Confessions is a curated yet impulsive thread of ten images and written responses originally shared on @ejhotdogs, the Instagram account of Sydney-based artist EJ Son. Within these concertinaed pages, elements of Son’s personal narrative and artistic inquiry cohabit in tension and paradox. Each fold traces a seemingly random selection of pictures and observations, yet from the chaos of the infinite scroll emerges a constellation of the artist’s conceptual touchstones—abjection, perversion, and the absurd moments that follow from normative constructions of gender, race and sexuality. Embracing contradiction as an inherent and inhabitable aspect of life, Son dwells, dives and bathes within it: finding off-beat rhythms and fleeting coherence within disorder. Confessions is a sequence of small exposures, delighting in the idiosyncratic ways that individuals arrange themselves within the whirlpool of it all.
