Niro Kandasamy
Dr Niro Kandasamy is a historian in the School of Humanities at the University of Sydney. Before joining the University of Sydney in 2022, she held teaching positions at the University of Melbourne, Australian Catholic University, and La Trobe University. She earned her undergraduate degree with first class honours from the University of New South Wales, and her PhD from the University of Melbourne. Prior to receiving her PhD, she held senior research positions across non-government organisations in New South Wales and Victoria. She has been awarded visiting fellowships at the University of Oxford and York University and was a US Fulbright scholar at Georgetown University in 2024. She was named an ABC Top 5 Humanities early career scholar in 2022. She is co-founder of the Powerful Stories Network, which presents research, supports community organisations, and publishes on Indigenous and refugee stories in settler colonies across the world. She researches histories of war, refugee resettlement, international relations, transnational activism, and settler colonialism. Beyond research, she contributes to The Conversation, ABC, BBC, and SBS, among other public outlets. She is passionate about teaching and mentoring and has received awards for these efforts from the University of Sydney and beyond.
